Discover Tacklebox Express

Located along Columbia Avenue in the heart of Prentiss, Mississippi, Tacklebox Express isn’t just another small-town diner—it’s the kind of place where comfort food meets genuine Southern warmth. Stepping inside, you’re greeted by the aroma of fried catfish sizzling in the kitchen and the soft buzz of conversation from locals who’ve made this spot their go-to for years. The address—931 Columbia Ave, Prentiss, MS 39474—has become something of a landmark for travelers who crave hearty portions and a touch of home in every bite.

What sets this place apart is its straightforward approach: no fancy frills, no gimmicks, just good food done right. The name alone hints at what you’ll find—fresh seafood prepared the way it should be. Their signature fried catfish is golden and crisp, paired perfectly with hush puppies and creamy coleslaw. It’s a meal that reminds you why Southern cooking has such a loyal following. The shrimp baskets are another local favorite, lightly battered and seasoned to perfection. Even the fries here seem to taste better, perhaps because they’re always hot and served with a side of genuine hospitality.

The menu caters to both seafood lovers and those looking for classic comfort dishes. If you’re not in the mood for fish, the juicy burgers and hand-battered chicken tenders are equally worth the trip. Portions are generous, ensuring you never leave hungry. Regulars often mention the daily specials, which rotate based on what’s fresh and available—a subtle sign of the team’s commitment to quality over quantity. In a world where many restaurants cut corners, this place still does things the old-fashioned way: with patience, pride, and a love for good food.

From a culinary perspective, what’s interesting is how the diner manages to balance traditional Southern fare with just enough variety to keep things exciting. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, nearly 70% of diners value locally inspired menus when choosing where to eat, and this is exactly where Tacklebox Express shines. Every dish feels rooted in the local culture, echoing the flavors that have defined Mississippi’s food scene for generations. The cooks seem to understand that good cooking isn’t just about following recipes—it’s about experience, about knowing when to flip the fish or how long to let the hush puppies fry to achieve that perfect golden hue.

On weekends, the crowd tells the story. Pickup trucks line the gravel lot by noon, and families gather inside for lunch after church. There’s an easy rhythm to the place, a sense of community that’s hard to replicate. You’ll often see the same faces week after week, which says more about the restaurant’s trustworthiness than any online review ever could. Still, the online feedback is glowing—Google and Facebook reviews highlight the friendly staff, quick service, and consistent flavor that keeps people coming back. One reviewer mentioned how the “fish melts in your mouth,” while another praised the “down-home atmosphere that feels like Sunday dinner at grandma’s.”

As someone who’s visited dozens of diners across the South, I can say the charm here feels authentic. The decor is simple—think wooden tables, a few nautical touches, maybe a mounted bass or two—but the cleanliness and attention to detail stand out. You can tell the owners care about maintaining a welcoming environment. The staff often address customers by name, and that personal touch makes all the difference. It’s this consistency and heart that turn a small eatery into a local institution.

From an operational standpoint, it’s impressive how efficiently the place runs. Orders come out quickly even during busy lunch hours, a sign of a well-trained kitchen team. It reflects what hospitality experts like Danny Meyer often emphasize: success in dining isn’t just about great food, but about creating a complete experience—from the first greeting to the final bite. The restaurant’s reputation in the Prentiss community also highlights a broader trend in American dining: the revival of local eateries as the heart of small-town life. Research from the National Retail Federation shows that consumers increasingly prefer supporting independent restaurants over chains, particularly when authenticity and service quality are clear. Tacklebox Express fits that movement perfectly.

If you find yourself traveling through Jefferson Davis County, this is the kind of stop that adds character to your trip. The location is convenient enough for travelers heading through Highway 84, yet cozy enough for a slow, sit-down meal. Locals often grab takeout, but if you have time, sitting down to eat here is the best way to experience what makes it special. Watching the staff interact with regulars, hearing the sizzle from the kitchen, and tasting food that’s clearly cooked with care—it all comes together in a way that feels genuinely Southern.

Every town needs a place like this—a restaurant that captures its community’s flavor, both literally and figuratively. Whether you’re after seafood, burgers, or just a slice of small-town comfort, this little spot on Columbia Avenue delivers more than just a meal. It delivers a memory—one seasoned with warmth, flavor, and the unmistakable spirit of Mississippi.

  • Quick bite to eat! The food truck set up is great! Park on the side walk right up and order. Sometimes you get your food really quickly other times we’ve waited 10-15mins for it.

  • The people are super friendly and the food is awesome! Cajun boiled shrimp is the best. They also have some combo plates not listed on the menu, but they are posted in the window. The only disappointment was that they used to do three sides with a meal, now it’s only two. (I’d recommend the baked beans and fried corn, and go get some fries from Ward’s if you need another side!)

  • The Cajun boiled shrimp here is definitely what God is serving in His heaven! I don't know which was more divine, the food or the friendly folks who made it for me! If I could give this place a billion stars, it wouldn't be enough to do this place justice. I hope I someday pass through here again so I can have more of their food and more of their sweet hospitality!
